1. Who is eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

To qualify for the CDCP, you must meet all four of the following requirements:

  • You don’t  have access to dental insurance
  • Your adjusted family  net income is less than $90,000
  • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • You have filed your tax return in Canada for the previous year

Currently, applications are open for seniors aged 65 and over, children under 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. Eligible Canadians aged 18 to 64 can apply starting in May 2025. If you have dental coverage through a provincial, territorial, or federal government social program, you are eligible for CDCP. However, your  plan  will be  coordinated between the coverages to avoid duplication.

2. What dental services are covered under the CDCP?

The CDCP covers a range of oral health care services, including:

  • Preventive dental care:  Your plan covers preventive cleanings, exams, and diagnostic services like X-rays.
  • Restorative services:  Do you have decayed or damaged teeth? CDCP offers numerous restorative services, including fillings, crowns, and more.  It also covers extractions, root canals, excisions, and other oral surgical services.
  • Anesthetics and sedation services:  CDCP covers mild to deep sedation and general anesthesia.  However, certain procedures may require pre-authorization to determine eligibility for coverage.
  • Orthodontics:  Your plan covers medically necessary orthodontics within a maximum spending limit.

CDCP covers almost all the dental care you need.  That’s why finding a dentist who accepts CDCP near Bolton, Ontario, is a plus.  It means you can access the necessary dental care without breaking the bank.

3. How do I apply for the CDCP?

You can apply for the CDCP online through the official Government of Canada website. To apply,  you’ll  need:

  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Full name
  • Home and mailing address
  • Date of birth
  • Information about any dental coverage through government social programs
  • Confirmation that you and your spouse have filed your tax return in Canada for the previous year and have received your notice of assessment

While all qualifying residents are encouraged to apply online, you can still apply by phone at 1-833-537-4342 or 1-833-677-6262 for a teletypewriter (TTY).

4. Can I use the CDCP if I already have private dental insurance?

No, individuals with access to dental insurance, including private or employer-sponsored plans, are not eligible for the CDCP. The plan is intended for those without any dental coverage.

5. How much does CDCP cover?

The amount of coverage depends on the adjusted family net income and whether the services qualify for CDCP coverage.  If your income is under $70,000, CDCP covers 100% of eligible service costs. For incomes between $70,000 and $90,000, the coverage ranges between 40% and 60%.  Always confirm treatment costs and out-of-pocket expenses with your dental provider before starting treatment.
