How dental bridges “bridge” the gap between teeth
Dental bridges are an excellent way for patients to replace one or more teeth within the smile. In fact, many of our dental patients choose them because they do not need special care or attention in the same manner that a partial or full denture might. Drs. Geeta Gautham, David Ma, and Ammar Taimish of Humber Valley Dental in Bolton, Ontario, encourage patients to ask about this option for tooth replacement when considering their choices from the start. Let’s look at some of the commonly asked questions about dental bridges.
What is a dental bridge?
Our dentists describe the dental bridge as a restoration that literally “bridges” the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It is usually made from porcelain materials to match the natural colouration of teeth, and it is cemented into place with existing tooth structures, dental implants, or a combination of both.
What are the benefits of choosing a dental bridge over other options?
Many patients appreciate that they do not have to remove their dental bridge for cleaning as they might with dentures. Additionally, eating and speaking are not impacted by the restoration placement. For many, this provides peace of mind and security in knowing their smile looks great and functions properly. Patients also find that a bridge lasts many years when properly cared for.
How are dental bridges placed?
A fixed dental bridge uses adjacent teeth for support. If there are no teeth on one or both sides of the space, patients might have dental implants placed to create an implant-supported bridge. This is another option for patients to consider when restoring their smiles. Dental bridges are made from porcelain to look just like the existing teeth, allowing them to blend in with the smile and not look like an obvious restoration. Our team works closely with a dental laboratory to ensure the restoration matches the natural smile. The process from start to finish often takes at least two appointments to complete. During the first one, impressions of the prepared teeth are taken and sent to a dental laboratory to create the final restoration. A temporary is often bonded to protect the prepared tooth. Then, patients return to have the final restoration permanently bonded and are given aftercare instructions to extend the longevity of their new dental restoration!

Bridges
A bridge is a non-surgical way to replace one or many teeth. A bridge uses the adjacent teeth as anchors to support the missing tooth or teeth. With today’s dental advancements, a bridge can be fabricated in a fairly short period of time, using a metal or nonmetal foundation. Don’t let that missing tooth affect the way you speak, eat, and smile. Bridges yield immediate results that last a lifetime. Ask your dentist what type of bridge may be right for you.
