Healthy Smiles for a Lifetime: Five Dental Care Tips for Children

Dentistry for kid in Bolton, ON Area

One way to optimize your child’s health is by caring for their gums and teeth. Good oral hygiene from a tender age prepares your child for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Humber Valley Dental loves all patients, but we have a special place in our hearts for the little ones. We love seeing little smiles fill our office with joy. That’s why we offer pediatric dental hygiene services in Bolton, Ontario, to ensure we maintain healthy, confident smiles for all children.

Tips for maintaining a healthy smile in children

Even though baby teeth aren’t permanent, taking care of them is vital to maintain your child’s functionality and aesthetics. Besides, baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth. If they aren’t well-maintained and fall off prematurely, this can cause misalignment, overcrowding, and other issues in permanent teeth.

Here are the tips for keeping your son or daughter’s teeth and gums healthy and vibrant.

  • Establish an early routine: Your child’s dental care starts as soon as they are born. Wipe their gums with a damp, clean cloth before the first tooth comes in. Wipe the first tooth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water once the first tooth erupts (around 6-8 months). Around age 2, you can use a pint-sized amount of toothpaste to clean your child’s teeth, but encourage them to spit it out. As your child grows, watch out for bottle-feeding, thumb-sucking, mouth breathing, etc., because they can affect your child’s oral health later in life.
  • Brushing and flossing techniques: Teach your kid proper ways to brush their teeth. Show them how to brush their teeth in circular motions for at least two minutes and ensure they reach every tooth surface. Supervise their brushing until they develop the skills to do it independently. As soon as your child’s teeth fit together (between ages 2-6), show them how to floss their teeth.
  • Promote healthy dietary choices: Kids naturally prefer sweet flavours from birth. You can’t separate them from candies, chocolates, ice cream, and other sugary treats. Unfortunately, too much sugar consumption increases the risk of tooth decay, leading to unhealthy weight gain. Limit the intake of sugary foods and drinks. Encourage healthy snacks such as fruits, nuts, and cheese.
  • Dental visits: Ensure your child visits a dentist around six months when the first tooth comes in and every six months after that. Routine pediatric visits allow us to examine your child’s oral development and correct any abnormalities before it’s too late. However, that’s not all we do. We offer routine dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and other oral hygiene services to keep your child’s smile healthy and strong.
  • Avoid prolonged bottle use: Extended sippy cup use, especially when filled with sugary drinks like milk, juice, or formula, can lead to “baby bottle tooth decay.” When a child sips on these beverages for an extended period, especially before naps, the sugars linger on their teeth, providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria that cause cavities.
